First, what Lama actually isNajpierw, czym naprawdę jest Lama
Worth clearing up before anything else, because the name travels further than the facts do: Lama is not an Arnold feature. It was developed at Industrial Light & Magic, contributed to the open MaterialX standard, and has shipped inside RenderMan since version 24.
Because Lama is a MaterialX standard rather than a RenderMan-only shader, the same material description is also understood by other MaterialX-aware software — which is part of why studios adopt it.
The mental modelModel mentalny
PxrSurface is one node containing a fixed stack of layers — diffuse, specular, clearcoat, fuzz, subsurface, glass, glow — all present all the time, most of them switched off. You work by turning on the parts of a stack that already exists.
PxrSurface to jeden węzeł zawierający stały stos warstw — diffuse, specular, clearcoat, fuzz, subsurface, glass, glow — wszystkie obecne cały czas, większość wyłączona. Pracujesz, włączając części stosu, który już istnieje.
Lama has no stack. It gives you individual materials, each one doing exactly one thing, and separate nodes whose only job is to combine two materials into one. You build the stack yourself, in whatever shape the material actually needs.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
A Swiss Army knife versus a toolbox. The knife has everything in it already, always the same tools in the same order, and for most jobs that's genuinely faster. The toolbox holds fewer things at once but lets you bring exactly what the job needs — and lets you bring two screwdrivers when a job needs two.
Skrzynka trzyma naraz mniej rzeczy, ale pozwala przynieść dokładnie to, czego potrzebuje zadanie — i pozwala przynieść dwa śrubokręty, gdy zadanie potrzebuje dwóch.
That last part is the real difference. PxrSurface has one clearcoat because the stack has a slot for one clearcoat. In Lama, "coat over metal" is a Layer node, so "coat over metal over primer" is just another Layer node wrapped around the first. Nothing has to be faked.
Ta ostatnia część to prawdziwa różnica.
The Lama vocabularySłownictwo Lamy
There are fewer nodes than you'd expect. They split cleanly into three groups.
Węzłów jest mniej, niż byś się spodziewał. Dzielą się wyraźnie na trzy grupy.

- LamaSurface — where the finished material plugs in, the way PxrSurface plugs into a shading group.
Notice what isn't there: no gains, no lobe checkboxes, no "off by default." A Lama node that exists in your graph is contributing. You remove a lobe by deleting a node, not by zeroing a value. This makes Lama graphs easier to read at a glance — what you see is what the material does.
Mix vs Add vs LayerMix kontra Add kontra Layer
Three operators that all take two materials and return one. Choosing the wrong one is the most common way a Lama material goes wrong, and the difference is genuinely simple once stated.
LamaMix — two materials in different placesLamaMix — dwa materiały w różnych miejscach
A blend, controlled by a mask. At 0 you get the first material, at 1 you get the second, and in between you get a weighted blend. Feed it a texture and it becomes "material 2 wherever the mask is white."
This is the one for materials that occupy different parts of the surface: rust patches on painted steel, mud spattered on a boot, a label on a bottle. The two materials never coexist at the same point.
LamaLayer — one material on top of anotherLamaLayer — jeden materiał na wierzchu drugiego
A coating. The top material sits over the base, and light that isn't reflected by the top passes through to the base underneath — which is what actually happens physically when you varnish a piece of wood.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
Laminating a photograph. The plastic goes over the whole picture, not in patches. It adds its own sheen, and you still see the photograph through it, slightly changed. Both things are present at every point on the surface.
Laminowanie zdjęcia. Plastik idzie na całe zdjęcie, nie łatami. Dodaje własny połysk, a ty wciąż widzisz przez niego zdjęcie, lekko zmienione. Obie rzeczy są obecne w każdym punkcie powierzchni.
LamaLayer has a Top Thickness input, which is what makes it more than a fancy blend: it tells the renderer how far light travels through the top slab, so a coat with absorption in it tints what's underneath by the right amount. A thick tinted lacquer and a thin one behave differently, correctly, for free.
LamaLayer is the node that makes Lama worth using. Layer a dielectric over a conductor and you have physically-correct car paint — the coat taking its share of the light first, the metal getting what's left.
LamaAdd — two responses at the same pointLamaAdd — dwie odpowiedzi w tym samym punkcie
A straight sum, with a weight for each side. Both materials contribute fully and independently.
Prosta suma, z wagą dla każdej strony. Oba materiały wnoszą swój wkład w pełni i niezależnie.
This is the one to be careful with. Add is how you'd combine two specular responses that genuinely coexist — but because it's a plain sum, nothing stops the total exceeding the light that arrived. Two materials at full weight added together reflect twice as much light as the surface received.
If you read the "who balances the layers" section of the PxrSurface guide, this is the same trap in a new shape. Lama gives you the honest tool for coatings (Layer) and the dangerous one (Add) side by side. When in doubt about a coating, reach for LamaLayer, not LamaAdd — Layer conserves energy for you, Add does not.
Jeśli czytałeś sekcję „kto balansuje warstwy" w przewodniku PxrSurface, to ta sama pułapka w nowym kształcie. Lama daje ci uczciwe narzędzie do powłok (Layer) i niebezpieczne (Add) obok siebie.

Where the light goes, per operatorDokąd idzie światło, per operator
A hundred units of light arrive at one point on the surface. Each operator divides them up differently — and one of them doesn't divide them at all.
Mix and Layer can never exceed the light that arrived: Mix splits it by the mask, and Layer gives the base only what the top didn't take. Add has no such arithmetic in it — push both weights up and the bar runs off the end, which is a surface returning more light than fell on it. Nothing in the render will error; it will just quietly glow.

MetalsMetale
If you came through the AiStandardSurface guide, you'll remember that metals in PxrSurface mean tinting Face and Edge Color by hand and remembering to zero the diffuse. Lama takes the opposite approach: a metal is a different node, not a differently-tuned one.
LamaConductor only does metal. There's no diffuse lobe inside it to accidentally leave switched on, which quietly removes the single most common metal mistake in PxrSurface.
It offers two ways to describe the metal:
Oferuje dwa sposoby opisania metalu:
- Artistic mode — Reflectivity (the color reflected head-on) and Edge Color (how that shifts at grazing angles). Conceptually identical to PxrSurface's Face and Edge Color, so anything you learned there transfers directly.
- Scientific mode — IOR and Extinction, three numbers each, taken from measured data for real metals. Copper, aluminium and gold all have published values.
Miedź, aluminium i złoto mają opublikowane wartości.
LamaConductor ships defaulting to gold, in both parameterisations. Drop one into a graph and it looks like gold immediately — a useful sanity check that the node is doing something.
There's a Tint input, and the documentation asks you to use it "with parsimony, as a non-white value breaks physicality." That's a fair warning: Tint is a multiplier over the whole result, not a description of the metal. Colour your metal through Reflectivity and Edge Color, and keep Tint for art-directed cheats you're making on purpose.
Jest wejście Tint, a dokumentacja prosi, byś używał go „oszczędnie, bo wartość niebiała łamie fizyczność".
Car paint is the example that shows the whole system working: a LamaConductor for the flake, a LamaDielectric for the lacquer, joined by a LamaLayer. Three nodes, no gains to balance, and the coat correctly takes its share of the light before the metal sees any.
Lakier samochodowy to przykład pokazujący cały system w akcji: LamaConductor dla płatka metalu, LamaDielectric dla lakieru, połączone LamaLayer. Trzy węzły, żadnych gainów do balansowania, a powłoka poprawnie bierze swój udział światła, zanim metal cokolwiek zobaczy.
Which one should you useKtórego użyć
Neither is the upgrade. They're shaped for different problems, and most studios end up using both.
Reach for PxrSurface whenSięgnij po PxrSurface, gdy
- The material fits the stack — most props, sets and hard surfaces do.
- You want one node in the graph and one place to look when something's wrong.
- You're converting existing materials from another renderer, where the parameter-for-parameter mapping matters more than elegance.
- You need Presence for cutouts, or the per-lobe bump inputs.
- Materiał pasuje do stosu — pasuje do większości rekwizytów, setów i twardych powierzchni.
- Potrzebujesz Presence do wycięć albo wejść bump per-płat.
Reach for Lama whenSięgnij po Lama, gdy
- The material is genuinely layered — lacquer over metallic flake over primer — and the stack's single clearcoat isn't enough.
- You need two of something PxrSurface only has one of.
- Your pipeline is MaterialX-based and the material has to travel to other software.
- You want the graph itself to document the material, rather than a node with two hundred parameters where only nine are non-default.
Start with PxrSurface. Move a material to Lama when you catch yourself fighting the fixed stack — faking a second coat, or wanting a layer relationship the stack doesn't offer. That moment is a real signal, and it doesn't arrive for most materials.
Almost always LamaAdd where LamaLayer was wanted. Add sums both materials at full strength; Layer makes the top one take its share first and pass the rest down. For anything that reads as a coating, use Layer.
LamaMix runs 0 → Material 1 and 1 → Material 2. It helps to read the mix input as a mask for Material 2 over Material 1, and plug your two materials in accordingly rather than inverting textures.
LamaMix biegnie 0 → Materiał 1 i 1 → Materiał 2.
If you built the metal from LamaDiffuse plus a reflection instead of using LamaConductor, you've recreated the PxrSurface metal problem by hand. Metals have no diffuse component — use the node that has none.
Absorption in a LamaLayer's top material needs Top Thickness to be non-zero — it defaults to 0, meaning no interior distance for light to travel through, so no tinting. Set it before assuming the absorption color is broken.
There isn't one. Presence has no Lama node — cutouts stay a geometry-level concern. If a material's whole job is leaf cards, that's a point in PxrSurface's favour.
Those are the pitfalls that live in a node's parameters. The ones that live in the wiring — a graph that never reaches LamaSurface, a Layer with its top and base swapped, a coat that dims the glow underneath it — have a page of their own: when a Lama graph goes wrong, arranged by symptom with a diagram of each broken graph beside its correction.
