The mental modelModel mentalny
Both shaders are "one node does everything" surface shaders — you're not switching to a node-graph-per-material workflow. PxrSurface is built the same way AiStandardSurface is: a stack of light-response layers (diffuse, specular, a coat, subsurface, and so on) that all live inside one shader and blend together. The stack is just organized and named a little differently.
Broadly the same jobs, different names for most of them. The one layer that genuinely works differently — not just a rename — is Specular, because that's where "metalness" lives in Arnold and doesn't exist as a single slider in PxrSurface. More on that below.
PxrSurface also has one lobe with no Arnold counterpart at all: Rough Specular, a complete second specular layer with its own colors, roughness and bump. Nothing in AiStandardSurface maps onto it, so it stays switched off unless you deliberately reach for it.

Layer 1Warstwa 1
Diffuse / Base
This is the matte, non-shiny part of the material — the color you'd see under totally flat, shadowless lighting. In Arnold it's called Base; in PxrSurface it's called Diffuse. Same job, new label.
To matowa, nie-błyszcząca część materiału — kolor, jaki widziałbyś pod całkowicie płaskim, pozbawionym cieni światłem. W Arnoldzie nazywa się Base; w PxrSurface — Diffuse. Ta sama praca, nowa etykieta.
Diffuse Color / Gain
Base Color → Diffuse Color, and Base Weight → Diffuse Gain. These map one-to-one — texture your Diffuse Color exactly the way you'd texture Base Color.
Base Color → Diffuse Color (kolor rozproszenia), a Base Weight → Diffuse Gain (wzmocnienie rozproszenia).
Diffuse Roughness
Both shaders have a Diffuse Roughness control that exists for one reason: perfectly smooth diffuse math (called "Lambertian") makes every matte surface look faintly like painted plastic. Raising Diffuse Roughness breaks that up.
Oba shadery mają kontrolkę Diffuse Roughness (chropowatość rozproszenia), która istnieje z jednego powodu: idealnie gładka matematyka diffuse (nazywana „Lambertian") sprawia, że każda matowa powierzchnia wygląda odrobinę jak pomalowany plastik. Podniesienie Diffuse Roughness to rozbija.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
Chalk versus a freshly painted matte wall. Both are "not shiny," but chalk scatters light more unevenly because its surface is powdery at a microscopic level. Diffuse Roughness dials a material from "painted wall" (0) toward "chalk or dry clay" (higher values).
This one behaves the same way in both shaders — if you had a value you liked in AiStandardSurface, it's a safe starting point in PxrSurface too.
Layer 2 — the big oneWarstwa 2 — ta duża
Specular & "metalness"Specular i „metaliczność"
This is where the two shaders genuinely diverge, so it's worth slowing down here. Specular is the shiny, mirror-like reflection on top of the diffuse color — think of the diffuse layer as the "paint" and specular as the "varnish" sitting on top of it.
Specular Roughness
Works the same way in both shaders: it controls how blurry the reflection is.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
A mirror versus a smudged mirror. At 0, you get a clean reflection of your environment. As roughness rises, that reflection smears out — like breathing fog onto glass — until at 1.0 it barely looks reflective at all.
Lustro kontra zamazane lustro.
Why there's no "Metalness" sliderDlaczego nie ma suwaka „Metalness"
In AiStandardSurface, flipping Metalness toward 1 does two things at once: it tints the specular reflection using Base Color, and it fades out the diffuse layer, since real metals don't have a diffuse component — all the light bounces off the surface, none of it scatters underneath.
PxrSurface doesn't bundle that behavior into one slider. Instead, you get direct control over the two colors that make up a Fresnel reflection:
- Specular Face Color — the reflection color when you're looking straight at the surface.
- Specular Edge Color — the reflection color at a grazing, glancing angle.
- Specular Face Color — kolor odbicia, gdy patrzysz prosto na powierzchnię.
- Specular Edge Color — kolor odbicia pod kątem ślizgowym.
Non-metals (skin, plastic, wood) reflect a dim, colorless highlight head-on and a brighter, colorless highlight at grazing angles — so Face Color stays low and neutral, and Edge Color stays near white. Metals (gold, copper, chrome) reflect a tinted highlight even head-on — so for a metal, you push both Face Color and Edge Color toward the metal's actual color (e.g. warm yellow-gold for gold), and you manually turn Diffuse Gain down toward 0, since a metal shouldn't have a visible diffuse layer underneath.
Niemetale (skóra, plastik, drewno) odbijają słaby, bezbarwny rozbłysk wprost i jaśniejszy, bezbarwny rozbłysk pod kątem ślizgowym — więc Face Color zostaje niski i neutralny, a Edge Color blisko bieli. Metale (złoto, miedź, chrom) odbijają zabarwiony rozbłysk nawet wprost — więc dla metalu przesuwasz zarówno Face Color, jak i Edge Color w stronę rzeczywistego koloru metalu (np. ciepły żółto-złoty dla złota) i ręcznie zbijasz Diffuse Gain w stronę 0, bo metal nie powinien mieć widocznej warstwy diffuse pod spodem.
There is no one-click "make this metal" switch. Recreating a metal look means: tint both Specular Face and Edge Color to the metal's color, and manually zero out (or nearly zero out) Diffuse Gain. Skipping the second step is the most common reason a converted metal material looks "washed out" or plasticky in PxrSurface.
Odtworzenie looku metalu oznacza: zabarw oba, Specular Face i Edge Color, kolorem metalu, i ręcznie wyzeruj (albo prawie wyzeruj) Diffuse Gain.
What that one slider was doingCo robił ten jeden suwak
One sphere, split down the middle. Left half driven by Arnold's Metalness. Right half driven by PxrSurface's Face Color, Edge Color and Diffuse Gain, all set from that same number.
Jedna kula, przecięta na pół. Lewa połówka sterowana Metalness Arnolda. Prawa połówka sterowana Face Color, Edge Color i Diffuse Gain PxrSurface, wszystkie ustawione z tej samej liczby.
With Diffuse Gain zeroed the seam disappears at every Metalness value — matching those two colours and killing the diffuse is all the Arnold slider was ever doing. Switch it to "left at 1" and the seam reappears: that extra brightness on the right is the washed-out, plasticky metal described above, and the seam shows you exactly how much light shouldn't be there.
Fresnel Mode: Artistic vs. PhysicalFresnel Mode: Artistic kontra Physical
PxrSurface gives you a choice for how the specular color blends between Face and Edge:
- Artistic mode — you paint Face Color and Edge Color directly, with a Fresnel Exponent to control how quickly the surface transitions between them. This is the closest feeling to how you already think in Arnold: pick colors by eye, adjust until it reads right.
- Physical mode — instead of hand-picking colors, you drive the reflection from real-world Specular IOR (index of refraction) and, for metals, an Extinction Coefficient. This is more physically accurate but less immediately intuitive — you're dialling in numbers from real material data rather than eyeballing a color.
For most lookdev work, Artistic mode is the easier starting point if you're used to picking colors by eye in Arnold — and it's what PxrSurface already defaults to. Worth knowing, though: Pixar's own automatic converter goes the other way and outputs Physical mode, because it can compute exact IOR and extinction numbers from Arnold's values. You can't do that by eye, which is why Artistic remains the better manual choice.
Do większości pracy lookdev Artistic mode jest łatwiejszym punktem startowym, jeśli jesteś przyzwyczajony do dobierania kolorów na oko w Arnoldzie — i to na nim domyślnie stoi PxrSurface. Warto jednak wiedzieć: automatyczny konwerter Pixara idzie w drugą stronę i wypisuje Physical mode, bo potrafi wyliczyć dokładne liczby IOR i ekstynkcji z wartości Arnolda.
It helps to see that the two modes aren't describing different things. Every Fresnel reflection is one curve: how much light bounces off as you swing from looking straight at the surface round to looking along it. Artistic mode lets you pin the two ends of that curve and bend it; Physical mode computes the whole curve from a refractive index. Drag the IOR below and watch the Physical curve move, then try to land the Artistic one on top of it.
Both modes, one curveOba tryby, jedna krzywa
Top: the same curve painted onto a flattened sphere — Face color at the center, where the surface faces you head-on, Edge color at the rim, where it's grazing away from you, with the halfway point marked. Below: the curve itself. Horizontal: viewing angle, from head-on at the left to grazing at the right. Vertical: how much light the surface reflects.
Two things fall out of playing with this. Face Color around 0.04 with Edge Color at white is roughly IOR 1.5 — the ordinary dielectric every non-metal starts from. And the Fresnel Exponent has no counterpart in Physical mode at all: it exists precisely because hand-picked colours need a shape control that a refractive index supplies for free.
Beckmann vs. GGX
This one is easy to miss and changes the look of every highlight in your material. Arnold always uses a GGX highlight. PxrSurface lets you choose, under Specular Model — and it defaults to Beckmann, not GGX.
To łatwo przeoczyć, a zmienia wygląd każdego rozbłysku w twoim materiale.
The difference isn't the size of the highlight, it's the falloff at its edges. Beckmann is sharper and stops more abruptly; GGX keeps a faint "tail" of light glowing away from the centre. On a car body or a polished floor that tail is a large part of what the material reads as.
Set Specular Model to GGX before you judge a converted material. This is the same switch Pixar's own conversion shader makes automatically. Do the same on Clearcoat, which has its own separate Specular Model setting and also defaults to Beckmann.
What that tail actually looks like, why a roughness value doesn't transfer between the two models, and live spheres you can light and expose yourself are in Beckmann vs GGX.
Anisotropy
Anisotropy stretches the highlight in one direction instead of leaving it circular — the control you reach for on brushed metal.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
The bottom of a brushed steel pan, or the back of a MacBook. The light doesn't sit as a round dot; it smears into a line running along the direction the metal was brushed, because the microscopic grooves all point the same way.
The value maps across directly — both shaders treat 0 as "circular, no anisotropy" — but the ranges differ. Arnold's Specular Anisotropy runs 0 to 1. PxrSurface's Anisotropy runs −1 to 1, where the negative half gives you the same range of ellipses rotated ninety degrees. So every Arnold value has a home in PxrSurface, but not the other way round.
Specular Rotation does not survive conversion —
Pixar's own converter reads the parameter and then discards it — so
if your brushed metal relied on a rotation value, you'll be
rebuilding it with a texture or a tangent pattern. PxrSurface
controls the direction of the stretch through
Shading Tangent
(specularAnisotropyDirection) instead, and that input
only works when something is connected to it. Typing a value
into it does nothing.
Specular Rotation nie przetrwa konwersji —
własny konwerter Pixara odczytuje ten parametr, a potem go
wartości rotacji, będziesz go odtwarzać teksturą albo wzorem
stycznych. PxrSurface kontroluje zamiast tego kierunek rozciągnięcia
przez Shading Tangent
(specularAnisotropyDirection), a to wejście działa
Wpisanie
wartości nic nie robi.
It's worth knowing that the two aren't really different concepts, though. Arnold's own shader definition implements Specular Rotation by taking a tangent vector and spinning it about the normal — the same vector PxrSurface asks you for directly. The rebuild is mechanical, not mysterious.
Własna definicja shadera Arnolda implementuje Specular Rotation, biorąc wektor styczny i obracając go wokół normalnej — dokładnie ten sam wektor, o który PxrSurface prosi bezpośrednio. Odtworzenie jest mechaniczne, nie tajemnicze.
Why one renderer hands you an angle and the other a vector, what each can and cannot express, and why re-doing your UVs can rotate your highlights, are covered with interactive diagrams in Specular Rotation vs Shading Tangent.
PxrSurface carries a second, entirely independent specular layer called Rough Specular, with its own Face and Edge Color, roughness, Fresnel mode, anisotropy and bump. It exists so you can put a broad, soft sheen underneath a tight highlight — worn plastic, polished-then-scuffed metal, skin with both an oily and a dry reflection.
PxrSurface niesie drugą, całkowicie niezależną warstwę specular o nazwie Rough Specular, z własnym Face i Edge Color, roughness, trybem Fresnela, anizotropią i bumpem. Istnieje, byś mógł położyć szeroki, miękki połysk pod ciasnym rozbłyskiem — znoszony plastik, wypolerowany, a potem zarysowany metal, skóra z odbiciem zarówno tłustym, jak i suchym.
Nothing in AiStandardSurface maps onto it. When you're converting a material, leave its gains at zero; it's a tool for going beyond what the Arnold material could do, not part of the translation.
Cross-cuttingPrzekrojowe
Who balances the layersKto balansuje warstwy
This is the single idea that explains most "my converted material looks wrong" moments, and it isn't a parameter at all — it's a difference in who does the bookkeeping.
A surface can only reflect the light that lands on it. If the specular layer takes 90% of it, the diffuse layer underneath can only have what's left. AiStandardSurface manages that budget for you. Push Metalness up and Arnold quietly fades the diffuse layer out. Turn on Transmission and it takes the diffuse layer down again. Add Coat and it darkens what sits beneath. You never see those adjustments; they happen inside the shader.
Włącz Transmission, a znowu obniża diffuse.
PxrSurface hands you the budget and trusts you with it. Its lobes are much more independent — turning the specular up does not turn the diffuse down. Nothing warns you when the layers together are reflecting more light than arrived.
PxrSurface daje ci budżet i ci ufa.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
Arnold is a restaurant bill that splits itself. PxrSurface is a pile of cash on the table: the same total is available, but if one person takes more, it's on you to notice that someone else has to take less.
This isn't folklore — it's visible in Pixar's own conversion shader,
which has to hand-multiply Diffuse Gain by
(1 − metalness) and then again by
(1 − subsurface), and knock Subsurface Gain
down by (1 − sheen), purely because PxrSurface won't do
any of it on its own. So the "turn Diffuse Gain down for metals" advice
in the Specular section isn't a metal trick — it's one instance of a
rule that applies every time you raise a lobe.
To nie folklor — widać to we własnym shaderze konwersji Pixara,
który musi ręcznie pomnożyć Diffuse Gain przez
(1 − metalness), a potem jeszcze raz przez
(1 − subsurface), i zbić Subsurface Gain
In practice: every time you raise a gain, ask what should come down. Raising Subsurface Gain to 1 without lowering Diffuse Gain gives you a material lit twice. Raising Fuzz on a subsurface material does the same thing again.
Layer 3Warstwa 3
Clearcoat
Coat in Arnold becomes Clearcoat in PxrSurface. Both represent a thin, glassy top layer sitting over everything else — car paint lacquer, a screen protector, wet varnish on wood.
Coat w Arnoldzie staje się Clearcoat w PxrSurface. Oba reprezentują cienką, szklistą górną warstwę leżącą nad wszystkim innym — lakier samochodowy, folia ochronna ekranu, mokry werniks na drewnie.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
A layer of glass laid over the material. It adds its own small, sharp highlight on top of whatever's underneath, independent of the base specular layer, which is why car paint reads as "shiny in two different ways at once."
Clearcoat gets its own Face Color, Edge Color, Roughness, and IOR, completely separate from the main Specular layer below it — so you can make the coat sharp and clear while the base metal flake underneath is rougher, exactly like the Coat layer in AiStandardSurface.
Clearcoat dostaje własny Face Color, Edge Color, Roughness i IOR, całkowicie osobny od głównej warstwy Specular pod nim — więc możesz zrobić powłokę ostrą i czystą, podczas gdy leżący pod nią bazowy płatek metalu jest bardziej chropowaty, dokładnie jak warstwa Coat w AiStandardSurface.
Behavior and intent match closely — this is one of the more predictable translations. Default IOR in both shaders lands around 1.5, a reasonable starting point for most clearcoats.
Zachowanie i intencja pasują do siebie blisko — to jedno z bardziej przewidywalnych tłumaczeń. Domyślny IOR w obu shaderach ląduje w okolicy 1.5, rozsądny punkt startowy dla większości clearcoatów.

Sheen → Fuzz
Arnold's Sheen becomes Fuzz in PxrSurface. Both exist for the same reason: cloth, dust, and fine fibers catch light at grazing angles in a soft, velvety way that the main specular layer doesn't capture well.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
The pale glow around the silhouette of a velvet couch or a dusty countertop when it's backlit — light catching countless tiny fibers or dust particles standing up off the surface, rather than one clean reflective surface.
Blada poświata wokół sylwetki aksamitnej sofy albo zakurzonego blatu, gdy jest podświetlony pod światło — światło łapiące niezliczone drobne włókna albo cząstki kurzu stojące nad powierzchnią, zamiast jednej czystej powierzchni odbijającej.
Sheen → Fuzz Gain and Sheen Color → Fuzz Color are direct swaps. The third control is where it stops being a rename: AiStandardSurface gives you Sheen Roughness, and PxrSurface gives you Fuzz Cone Angle — not a roughness at all, but an angle in degrees, defaulting to 8.
Sheen → Fuzz Gain i Sheen Color → Fuzz Color to bezpośrednie zamiany. Trzecia kontrolka to miejsce, gdzie przestaje to być zmianą nazwy: AiStandardSurface daje ci Sheen Roughness, a PxrSurface daje Fuzz Cone Angle — wcale nie roughness, tylko kąt w stopniach, domyślnie 8.
The angle describes how far off the surface the imaginary fibers lean. A narrow cone means fibers standing almost straight up and a tight rim of light; a wide cone means fibers lying over at all sorts of angles and a broad, hazy glow. It's the same intent as roughness, expressed as geometry rather than as a 0–1 slider.
Wąski stożek oznacza włókna stojące niemal prosto i ciasną obwódkę światła; szeroki stożek oznacza włókna leżące pod wszelkimi kątami i szeroką, zamgloną poświatę. To ta sama intencja co roughness, wyrażona geometrią zamiast suwakiem 0–1.
The conversion to use is the one Pixar uses: Fuzz Cone Angle = 32 × Sheen Roughness. An Arnold Sheen Roughness of 0.3 becomes a Cone Angle of about 9.6°. Start there rather than at the default 8, then adjust by eye — the two sides are different distributions rather than the same one in different units, so treat the number as a well-chosen starting point and not as an exact equivalence.
Przelicznik, którego warto użyć, to ten sam, którego używa Pixar: Fuzz Cone Angle = 32 × Sheen Roughness.
Why the fuzz lobe has no mirror direction for a roughness to widen, what a cone angle physically measures, and where the 32× rule holds and where it drifts are in Why fuzz has a cone angle.

Subsurface scatteringSubsurface scattering
Both shaders simulate light entering a surface, bouncing around inside it, and exiting somewhere nearby — the effect that makes skin, wax, marble, and milk look soft and slightly translucent instead of flat.
Oba shadery symulują światło wchodzące w powierzchnię, odbijające się wewnątrz i wychodzące gdzieś w pobliżu — efekt, dzięki któremu skóra, wosk, marmur i mleko wyglądają miękko i lekko półprzezroczyście zamiast płasko.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
Shining a flashlight through your fingers. The light doesn't bounce straight off your skin — it goes in, scatters around inside, and comes back out reddened and softened. That's subsurface scattering.
To właśnie subsurface scattering.
The two parameters that matter most do map across, but the names disguise it badly. Arnold's Subsurface Radius is a color and becomes Mean Free Path Color; Arnold's Subsurface Scale is a distance and becomes Mean Free Path Distance. Radius sounds like a distance and isn't; Scale sounds like a multiplier and is the distance. Both instincts are wrong, in opposite directions.
Before you touch any of it, check Unit Length on the Scattering Globals page. It multiplies every subsurface distance, it defaults to 0.1 on the assumption your scene is modelled in centimetres, and Arnold has no equivalent parameter at all. If your scene is in metres, the whole layer is out by a factor of 100 and no amount of tuning the other fields will fix it.
Subsurface is the layer that differs most between the two shaders — it is the only one measured in real distances rather than 0–1 weights, PxrSurface offers six scattering models against Arnold's three, and Single Scatter is a separate lobe here rather than part of the same computation.
Subsurface to warstwa, która różni się najbardziej między oboma shaderami — to jedyna mierzona rzeczywistymi odległościami zamiast wagami 0–1, PxrSurface oferuje sześć modeli rozpraszania wobec trzech Arnolda, a Single Scatter jest tu osobnym płatem zamiast częścią tych samych obliczeń.
There's too much here for one section, so it has a page of its own: the subsurface scattering deep dive covers mean free path, Radius vs DMFP, Unit Length, choosing a model, Multiple Mean Free Paths, Single Scatter, and a step-by-step conversion recipe.
Jest tu za dużo na jedną sekcję, więc ma własną stronę: dogłębna analiza subsurface scattering obejmuje mean free path, Radius kontra DMFP, Unit Length, wybór modelu, Multiple Mean Free Paths, Single Scatter i przepis konwersji krok po kroku.

Emission → Glow
Arnold's Emission / Emission Color becomes PxrSurface's Glow — a straightforward rename. Both make a surface appear to give off its own light: screens, lava, lit signage, embers.
Emission / Emission Color Arnolda staje się Glow w PxrSurface — prosta zmiana nazwy. Oba sprawiają, że powierzchnia wygląda, jakby emitowała własne światło: ekrany, lawa, podświetlone szyldy, żarzące się węgle.
The split is the same on both sides: a gain that says how strong, and a color that says what color. Emission → Glow Gain, Emission Color → Glow Color. Values port over unchanged, and both default to off.
Worth remembering for both shaders: this makes the surface look bright, but it doesn't efficiently light the rest of the scene the way an actual light source does. Treat it as a texture/look effect, not a lighting tool.
If the emissive surface in your Arnold scene was genuinely illuminating things around it, the tool you want isn't the shader at all — it's a mesh light, in both renderers. Converting the material and wondering why the room went dark is a very common first afternoon in a new engine.

Transmission / Glass
Arnold's Transmission and PxrSurface's Glass both handle see-through materials — actual glass, clear liquid, thin plastic. Most character and hard-surface lookdev never touches this layer, but when you do need it, one structural difference matters more than all the parameter names put together.
Transmission Arnolda i Glass PxrSurface obsługują oba materiały przezroczyste — prawdziwe szkło, przezroczysty płyn, cienki plastik. Większość lookdevu postaci i twardych powierzchni nigdy nie dotyka tej warstwy, ale gdy jej potrzebujesz, jedna różnica strukturalna liczy się bardziej niż wszystkie nazwy parametrów razem wzięte.
One slider becomes two gainsJeden suwak staje się dwoma gainami
In Arnold, Transmission is a single weight. Raise it and the surface both refracts light through itself and reflects light off itself, because those two are physically the same event seen from two sides.
W Arnoldzie Transmission to pojedyncza waga.
PxrSurface separates them: Refraction Gain for the light passing through, Reflection Gain for the light bouncing off. Pixar's converter sets both from the one Arnold value, and so should you.
Konwerter Pixara ustawia oba z jednej wartości Arnolda i ty powinieneś zrobić to samo.
Setting only Refraction Gain is the classic mistake. You get glass you can see through with no reflections in it at all, which reads instantly as fake — real glass is doing both. Both gains default to 0, so neither is set for you.
A soap bubble, a window pane, a leaf, a drinking glass modelled as a single surface — all of these are "glass" that has no real interior for light to travel through. Arnold's Thin Walled becomes PxrSurface's Thin checkbox in the Glass section, and it does exactly what you'd hope: it still splits light correctly between reflection and refraction, but stops bending the ray as it passes through.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
Looking through a window versus looking through a solid glass brick. The window is glass, and it reflects like glass, but what you see through it isn't warped. Thin mode is how you say "this surface has no thickness worth simulating."
Color and absorptionKolor i absorpcja
Transmission Color maps onto Refraction Color — but only while Arnold's Transmission Depth is left at 0. Once you set a depth, Arnold stops treating the color as a simple tint and starts treating it as "the color white light becomes after travelling this far inside the object." That's absorption, and it belongs somewhere else in PxrSurface: the Interior section, driven by Extinction.
Transmission Depth is not a parameter you copy anywhere. It's a number that gets converted into an extinction value — the deeper the object, the more the tint accumulates. A thick green glass bottle and a thin one need different extinction values in PxrSurface to read as the same material, where in Arnold one depth value handled both. Expect a re-tune here.
Why one number can't cover both bottlesCzemu jedna liczba nie obejmie obu butelek
The same glass at two thicknesses. Colour accumulates along the path light takes through it, so the thick slab gets there faster.
To samo szkło w dwóch grubościach. Kolor narasta wzdłuż drogi, jaką przebywa światło, więc gruba płyta dochodzi do niego szybciej.
Find an extinction that makes the thin sample read the way you want, then look at the thick one — it has gone almost black. That is the re-tune the callout warns about. Arnold's Transmission Depth sidestepped it by describing the result at a reference distance rather than the absorption itself.
To właśnie przestrojenie, przed którym ostrzega dymek. Transmission Depth Arnolda omijał ten problem, opisując wynik przy odległości referencyjnej zamiast samej absorpcji.
The remaining glass controls line up predictably: Specular Roughness → Glass Roughness, Specular IOR → Glass Refractive Index (1.5 in both, which is window glass), and Specular Anisotropy → Glass Anisotropy.
Pozostałe kontrolki szkła układają się przewidywalnie: Specular Roughness → Glass Roughness, Specular IOR → Glass Refractive Index (1.5 w obu, czyli szkło okienne), i Specular Anisotropy → Glass Anisotropy.

Bump, normal & displacementBump, normal i displacement
AiStandardSurface takes one normal for the whole material, plus a separate one for the coat. PxrSurface takes eight: a global Bump in the Globals section, and then a private Bump input on Diffuse, Primary Specular, Rough Specular, Clearcoat, Iridescence, Fuzz and Glass.
AiStandardSurface przyjmuje jedną normalną dla całego materiału, plus osobną dla powłoki. PxrSurface przyjmuje osiem: globalny Bump w sekcji Globals, a potem prywatne wejście Bump na Diffuse, Primary Specular, Rough Specular, Clearcoat, Iridescence, Fuzz i Glass.
That's the biggest genuine capability gain in the whole shader, and also the easiest thing to get wrong on day one.
To największy realny zysk możliwości w całym shaderze, a jednocześnie najłatwiejsza rzecz do spartaczenia pierwszego dnia.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
A car bonnet with scratched lacquer. The scratches are in the clearcoat, not in the paint underneath — the paint is still perfectly smooth. In Arnold you fake that with one shared normal and hope. In PxrSurface you put the scratch bump on Clearcoat only and leave Diffuse flat, which is what's physically happening.
Maska samochodu z porysowanym lakierem. W Arnoldzie udajesz to jedną wspólną normalną i masz nadzieję.
The part that catches peopleCzęść, która ludzi łapie
The per-lobe inputs are overrides. Leave one empty and that lobe falls back to the global Bump, which is the behaviour you want. But the moment you start connecting bumps per-lobe, any lobe you forget keeps using the global one — so a material can end up with detail on its specular and none on its diffuse, and it reads as a strangely plastic surface without an obvious cause.
Wejścia per-płat to nadpisania.
Converting a material? Connect your bump or normal map to the global Bump in Globals and stop there. That reproduces Arnold's single-normal behaviour exactly. Arnold's Coat Normal is the one exception — it has a real home in Clearcoat → Bump. Reach for the other six later, deliberately, when you want something Arnold couldn't do.
To dokładnie odtwarza zachowanie pojedynczej normalnej z Arnolda.
These inputs only accept connections — typically a PxrBump or PxrNormalMap node. Typing numbers into them does nothing.
Te wejścia akceptują tylko połączenia — zwykle węzeł PxrBump albo PxrNormalMap. Wpisanie liczb do nich nic nie robi.
Displacement isn't in the shaderDisplacement nie jest w shaderze
Worth stating plainly because it surprises people: in RenderMan, displacement is a separate node (PxrDisplace) attached to the material, not a parameter inside PxrSurface. You won't find it by scrolling.
Warto powiedzieć to wprost, bo ludzi to zaskakuje: w RenderManie displacement to osobny węzeł (PxrDisplace) podpięty do materiału, nie parametr wewnątrz PxrSurface. Nie znajdziesz go, przewijając.
The gotcha that costs an afternoon: RenderMan needs a displacement bound — an attribute on the geometry telling the renderer the furthest distance the surface might move. If it's too small, your displacement gets silently clipped and the detail simply isn't there. If a displaced surface looks flattened or chopped off in RenderMan and fine in Arnold, check the bound before you touch the shader.
Surface detailDetal powierzchni
Presence & opacityPresence i opacity
This is how you cut shapes out of geometry: leaf cards, hair cards, chain-link fence, a torn poster. Arnold calls it Opacity. PxrSurface calls it Presence. They are not the same kind of control.
Arnold nazywa to Opacity. PxrSurface nazywa to Presence. To nie ten sam rodzaj kontrolki.
Arnold's Opacity is a color. You can make a surface let red light through while blocking green — stained glass done cheaply, or a tinted shadow. PxrSurface's Presence is a single float. There is nowhere for the color to go.
Opacity Arnolda to kolor. Możesz sprawić, że powierzchnia przepuści czerwone światło, blokując zielone — tanio zrobiony witraż albo zabarwiony cień. Presence PxrSurface to pojedyncza liczba. Nie ma dokąd pójść kolorowi.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
A stencil versus a piece of tinted film. Presence is a stencil: this bit of the surface is here, that bit isn't. Opacity can be either a stencil or tinted film, depending how you drive it.
Pixar's own converter handles the mismatch by taking the luminance of your RGB opacity and throwing the color away. If your Arnold material used colored opacity for a real effect, that effect does not convert — rebuild it with the Glass layer, which is where colored see-through belongs in PxrSurface.
Presence wants 0 or 1 — nothing in betweenPresence chce 0 albo 1 — nic pomiędzy
RenderMan's documentation is unusually blunt about this: Presence is meant to be a binary mask, taking intermediate values only along edges so the cutout can antialias. A value parked halfway between 0 and 1 across a whole surface produces noise rather than transparency.
So if you were using Arnold's Opacity at, say, 0.5 to make something generally see-through, that isn't a Presence job. Presence answers "is there surface here?" — not "how transparent is it?" For actual semi-transparency, use the Glass layer.
Do prawdziwej półprzezroczystości użyj warstwy Glass.
Optional layerWarstwa opcjonalna
Iridescence & thin filmIridescence i cienka warstwa
Arnold's Thin Film Thickness and Thin Film IOR become PxrSurface's Iridescence section. Both produce the same effect: color that shifts as the surface turns, coming from a film too thin to see.
Thin Film Thickness i Thin Film IOR Arnolda stają się sekcją Iridescence PxrSurface. Oba dają ten sam efekt: kolor zmieniający się wraz z obrotem powierzchni, pochodzący z warstwy zbyt cienkiej, by ją zobaczyć.
Think of it asPomyśl o tym tak
A film of oil on a wet road, or a soap bubble just before it pops. The rainbow isn't pigment — it's an extremely thin transparent layer where light reflecting off the top and off the bottom interferes with itself, and which colors survive depends on the angle you're standing at.
PxrSurface offers two ways in, under Iridescence Mode:
PxrSurface oferuje dwa sposoby podejścia, pod Iridescence Mode:
- Physical — you give it a Thin Film Thickness in nanometres, exactly as in Arnold. This is the mode to use when converting.
- Artistic — you pick two colors and let the shader sweep between them. There's no Arnold equivalent, and it's the default, so a converted material won't be reading your thickness value until you switch modes.
Both shaders measure thickness in nanometres, so the number ports directly — but switch Iridescence Mode to Physical first, or the thickness field is ignored (it's hidden in Artistic mode). PxrSurface's default thickness is 800 nm, which is a visible effect; Arnold's is 0, which is none. A material that arrives faintly rainbow-tinted for no reason is usually this.
Thickness and angle, togetherGrubość i kąt razem
The field below is every combination: thickness across, viewing angle down. Read a single column and you have the colour sweep a film of that thickness produces as the surface turns away from you.
Pole poniżej to każda kombinacja: grubość w poziomie, kąt patrzenia w pionie.
Click between the two defaults to see the problem the callout above describes: Arnold's 0 is a flat, colourless column, and PxrSurface's 800 nm is a strong green-to-magenta sweep. Nothing in a converted material asks for that — it is simply what the field was already set to.

Assign a fresh PxrSurface and it renders as a dark grey ball with no highlight at all. That's not a mistake — PxrSurface starts with almost everything switched off, where AiStandardSurface starts with a usable plastic. Knowing the defaults saves a lot of confusion.

The order to work inKolejność pracy
Layers sit on top of each other, so build from the bottom. Judging a highlight before the diffuse underneath it is right just means doing it twice.
- Diffuse first. Copy Base Color into Diffuse Color and Base Weight into Diffuse Gain. Look at it with no specular. If this reads wrong, nothing above it will save you.
- Set the specular model to GGX, on both Primary Specular and Clearcoat, before you judge any highlight.
- Give the specular a color. It starts black, meaning off. For non-metals, a low neutral Face Color and a near-white Edge Color. For metals, push both toward the metal's own color.
- Now pay the energy bill. If this is a metal, take Diffuse Gain to 0. If you raised Subsurface, take Diffuse Gain down to match. Nothing does this for you here.
- Roughness. Arnold squares its roughness internally and PxrSurface doesn't, so treat your old value as a starting point, not an answer.
- Coat, then detail. Clearcoat, then bump into the global Bump input, then Presence for cutouts. Save the per-lobe bump inputs for when you actually want them.
- Najpierw Diffuse. Skopiuj Base Color do Diffuse Color i Base Weight do Diffuse Gain.
- Daj specular kolor. Zaczyna czarny, czyli wyłączony. Dla niemetali — niski neutralny Face Color i niemal biały Edge Color. Dla metali — przesuń oba w stronę własnego koloru metalu.
- Teraz zapłać rachunek energetyczny. Jeśli to metal, zbij Diffuse Gain do 0. Jeśli podniosłeś Subsurface, obniż Diffuse Gain odpowiednio. Nic nie robi tego tutaj za ciebie.
- Roughness.
Before you decide the renderer is lyingZanim uznasz, że renderer kłamie
- Is Specular Face Color still black? Then there is no specular.
- Is Specular Model still Beckmann? Then the highlight shape is not Arnold's.
- For a metal — is Diffuse Gain still above 0?
- For glass — did you set both Refraction Gain and Reflection Gain?
- For skin — is Mean Free Path Distance still sitting at 10?
- For displacement — is the displacement bound large enough?
You tinted Specular Face/Edge Color but forgot to lower Diffuse Gain. A visible diffuse layer under a metal reflection is almost always the culprit — see the Specular section above.
Zabarwiłeś Specular Face/Edge Color, ale zapomniałeś obniżyć Diffuse Gain. Widoczna warstwa diffuse pod odbiciem metalu to niemal zawsze przyczyna — patrz sekcja Specular wyżej.
Subsurface values ported directly from Arnold's Radius/Scale rarely hold up. Re-tune by eye rather than trusting the numbers.
Wartości subsurface przeniesione wprost z Radius/Scale Arnolda rzadko się sprawdzają. Przestrój na oko zamiast ufać liczbom.
Check Clearcoat's own Roughness — it defaults to a very sharp, low-roughness look, so on a rough base material it can read as barely-there unless the coat itself is kept nearly smooth.
Double-check you're comparing Face Color (head-on) against Face Color, not against Arnold's single Specular Color — PxrSurface's two-color Fresnel model means a like-for-like comparison needs both Face and Edge Color set intentionally, not just one.
PxrSurface defaults to the Beckmann specular model; Arnold is always GGX. Beckmann's highlight stops more abruptly, GGX keeps a soft tail. Switch Specular Model to GGX — and remember Clearcoat has its own separate one.
PxrSurface has a bump input on every lobe, not just one for the whole shader. If you connected bump to Specular but not Diffuse, half the material is flat. When converting, use the global Bump in Globals and leave the per-lobe ones empty.
Presence expects 0 or 1, not values in between — anything parked halfway produces noise. And if your Arnold material relied on colored opacity, that information is gone: only the luminance survives. Colored see-through belongs in the Glass layer.
Kolorowa przezroczystość należy do warstwy Glass.
Arnold's single Transmission slider becomes two separate controls. Setting Refraction Gain without Reflection Gain gives you something you can see through that never catches the light. Set both to your old Transmission value.
Not a shader problem. Displacement is a separate PxrDisplace node, and RenderMan clips it at the geometry's displacement bound. Too small a bound silently chops the detail off.
To nie problem shadera. Displacement to osobny węzeł PxrDisplace, a RenderMan obcina go na displacement bound geometrii. Zbyt mały bound po cichu ucina detal.
PxrSurface vs Lama
PxrSurface isn't the only way to build a material in RenderMan. MaterialX Lama takes the opposite approach — small single-purpose nodes you wire together yourself. The companion guide covers when each one is the right tool.
